2021 Member Statistics: Fault Source

The most frequently faulted course elements for members during the 2021 competition year were an Other Oxer (25%) followed by an Other Vertical (15%).

If we drill down a third metric, a Front Rail Other Oxer contributed 15% of Faults.

Combination-In Oxer (9%) and Combination-In Vertical (7%) were the next most faulted.

In general, we consistently see the "Other" Jump Detail represent the most faulted course element by a wide margin.  Often, as we see here 2 or 3 metrics can be added to the analysis (for example, JUMP TYPE and RAIL) before any other Jump Detail reaches the same percentage of faults.

Take a step back to consider Member statistics by 6 individual Fault Source metrics:

Although individual horses vary significantly, once data is aggregated across all members, faults are split evenly for JUMP TYPE and nearly evenly for LEAD, which we might expect.

Faults are skewed nearly 2/3 to Front RAIL and slightly more (53%) to the Front LEG.

Just over 60% of faults occur at a Related DISTANCE.

Nearly 40% of faults occur at an Other JUMP DETAIL, as noted above.  In total, Combination Faults represent nearly 1/3 of faults, with the most coming from the In element.  Liverpools are responsible for 11% of faults.  All other categories are less significant.

Detailed analysis of Fault Source by Rider status reveals differences in 2 metrics: JUMP TYPE and RAIL, with JR/AOs showing more faults at Verticals and at Front RAILS.
